There are lots of exciting and fun ways to get involved including being part of a group, coming to events, looking at information and giving feedback.

We have Service User Groups that meet regularly in the areas. The groups work on a range of items these include
- Interviewing new members of staff for their local learning disability community teams
- Contributing to quality improvement projects
- Working alongside other organisations (such as the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and Southampton University) towards projects
- Hosting events for Learning Disability Awareness Week
- Designing and reviewing easy read information
- Sharing their thoughts and ideas on social media
- Attending awards events
- We have a Patient Experience Group which is a member of the groups from each area which meet to sign off work that has gone through the group. This group meets bi monthly.

We have a variety of groups, these are
Quality Checkers Group
Our quality checkers group visit local services and provide feedback on how accessible they are. They give advice about things like signage, décor and information.
Inclusive Communication Group
Our inclusive communication group meet monthly to look at leaflets, posters, letters and websites. They give feedback on how these could be made easier to read and understand.
Champion Trainers
Our Champion trainers have developed a training session about what it is like to live with learning disabilities. They deliver this to a wide audience and get fantastic feedback.
Recruitment and Induction Group
Our recruitment group have contributed to the development of staff job descriptions, they are involved in all interviews and provide induction for all new staff and students.
Portsmouth Partnership Board
The Portsmouth Learning Disability Partnership Board meets 5 times a year. This is an open forum, anyone is welcome to attend. This includes service users, carers, friends, providers and professionals. We talk about important issues for people with learning disabilities and influence change.
People Library
We are working with Portsmouth University to make a range of films about topics such as autism, transition, eating and drinking.
We are always looking for people who are willing to share their experiences and help write scripts and be in the films.
Focus Groups
We run regular focus groups and interviews with service users, carers and providers to find out what you think about different aspects of our team.

Paid roles
We employ people with learning disabilities in specific roles such as Makaton signing and digital image production.
You don’t have to attend a group to get involved. There are lots of other ways you can help us make our services better. We are happy to talk to you on a one to one basis. We can speak over the phone, in person or on a video call.

We have an Experts By Experience Service User Group that meet monthly. Our Experts are the voice of and ambassadors for our learning disability community. The group works on a range of projects including:
Inclusive Communication
- looking at leaflets, posters, letters and websites. They give feedback on how these could be made easier to read and understand.
- Supporting colleagues and other groups to develop their own Easy Read information- our Top Tips.
Developing accessible information using video
- Working with the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and St Mary’s Hospital to develop visual tours of hospital departments - ‘What to expect when you go to the hospital’
- Filming team staff to tell us how they can help in their role - ‘What they do’
- Filming personal experiences to share
Quality improvement projects
- Working alongside the Quality Assurance Accreditation Team (QAAS) at St Mary’s Hospital completing audits to ensure our Island residents receive person centred healthcare for inpatients and outpatients.
- Working with primary care providers to improve local healthcare services for our Learning Disability community.
Learning Disability Champion Training
- Supporting our Learning Disabilty liaison team to plan and deliver training to hospital healthcare professionals.
- Raising awareness of the challenges people with Learning Disability experience when accessing hospital
- Identifying reasonable adjustments that can be made to support people better with their health needs
- Introduce communication strategies to use such as MAKATON, symbols, medelling and using the Total Communication Approach
- Introduce valuable hints, tips and strategies to overcome anxieties
- Developing Easy Read information on accessing hospital appointments and admissions
- Presenting information in a way that aids understanding of an individual’s treatment plan
- Raising awareness of the ‘This Is Me’ hospital passport
- Identify common healthcare conditions that people with Learning Disabilty experience
- Keep up to date with government healthcare statistics and incentives for people with Learning Disabilities
Interviewing and recruiting staff
- Identifying key qualities for each role and the essential people skills we look for in our workforce
- Devising interview questions
- Interviewing new members of staff for the Community Learning Disabilities Team
Health promotion
- Contributing to the planning and delivery of health promotion workshops such as relationship courses
- Attending health promotion events with primary health care such as health fayres
- Taking part in community awareness events such as Learning Disability awareness week
Networking
- Working alongside other organisations such as the People Matter and Isle of Wight NHS Trust
