Shakespeare Road Medical Practice in Basingstoke has received a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), in its first inspection since registration, with the practice achieving an Outstanding rating for responsiveness.
The inspection, carried out between 12 and 17 November 2025, found the practice, which is run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (HIOWH) in collaboration with Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and North Hampshire Urgent Care (NHUC), to be performing well and meeting expectations across the majority of areas assessed, including Safe, Effective, Caring and Well led, all of which were rated Good.
Inspectors highlighted the practice’s exceptional responsiveness, noting that patients can access care through a range of routes including online, telephone and face to face appointments.
The CQC recognised the practice’s strong commitment to reducing health inequalities, praising targeted outreach and community engagement work with vulnerable groups, ethnic minority communities and military veterans.
Other achievements noted by the CQC included:
• Patients were found to be actively involved in decisions about their care and treatment, and feedback demonstrated confidence that the practice listens and responds to concerns. The report found that patients were treated with kindness, dignity and respect, and that staff consistently involved people in decisions about their care.
• Feedback through the Friends and Family Test showed that between 80% and 82% of respondents would recommend the service.
• Care and treatment were found to be effective and evidence based, with strong multidisciplinary working across community services, mental health teams, care homes and secondary care providers. People with long term conditions received regular reviews, personalised care plans and timely follow up, supporting continuity and safety of care.
Dan Baylis, Chief Medical Officer at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We welcome the CQC’s report on Shakespeare Road Medical Practice. We recognise the hard work and dedication shown by our staff to achieve this rating across a broad range of areas assessed. A key strength is the collaborative ways of working with our local partners involved to provide the best possible care and meaningful health outcomes for Basingstoke communities.
