The NHS 10-year health plan has three radical shifts at its heart in terms of how NHS healthcare will be designed and delivered in the next decade.
Those three pillars are: hospital to community; analogue to digital; and sickness to prevention.
The HIOWH Trust Strategy 2025-30 is aligned to this 10-year plan in one of its four aims focused on improving population health outcomes.
The health needs of Hampshire and Isle of Wight residents are varying, multi-layered and at times complex. Working with our patients and service users, staff, partners and local communities is crucial to address and reduce health inequalities, tackle lifestyle factors and the wider impacts on health so that people can thrive. An integral part of this is improving population health outcomes.
Over the past few months, teams across the Trust have been hosting online virtual events informing, educating and supporting staff and public on the following subjects which can enable more preventative mindsets and approaches to health:
- Mental health awareness – (during Mental Health Awareness Week in May) partnered up with Solent Mind to deliver a session about having a supportive conversation about mental health, including a helpful framework, what to actively do and barriers to having a conversation with the overall aim of increasing confidence in having conversations around mental health and wellbeing.
- Falls prevention - our Trust's falls prevention team offered a Falls Friends Talk – looking at reducing the risk of falling, how to support someone who is prone to falls, advice on keeping active, along with the impact of vision, hearing, footwear, hydration and medication on the risk of falling.
- Podiatry – this session homed in on the importance of people looking after their feet, and building confidence in when to seek help and being aware of what services are available.
- Diabetes – this session highlighted how to look for indicators that might see people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, how to manage Type 2 diabetes and knowing the difference between Type 1 and Type 2
Here are some thoughts from attendees:

Suzanne Pepper, Lead Governor for the Trust, was integral in the events being created as part of the HIOWH member delivery plan. Suzanne attended all the events. Suzanne said: ‘It was evident from these enjoyable sessions that information sharing is power. Lively discussions made everyone feel part of the Trust. I’m looking forward to upcoming sessions.”
For 2026, HIOWH teams are looking at running more sessions on different topics relating to children’s health, sexual health, mental health and physical health areas where prevention messaging can really help either early detection or prevention of illness.
